In recent years, Kelston has started a tradition of summer work camps, giving assistance to projects in the poorer districts of Eastern Europe. In the summers of 2004 and 2006, a group from Kelston and Westpark spent two weeks working in Transylvania, Romania. The work included damp-proofing a hostel used by youth groups and painting the parish church next door with weather-proof varnish. We also started building a light shelter next to a children’s playground for which we laid the foundations, and carried out other improvements to the site of the parish church. Those who took part in these trips thoroughly enjoyed this unique experience; and some went a second time, while others have since taken part in similar projects in other parts of the world. This year we ventured out on a new project, helping to build a church in Przemysl in Poland.

We flew to Krakow in Poland and then travelled by train to Przemysl, just a few miles from the Ukrainian border. We were one of several groups of young people helping with this project throughout July and August.

This region of Poland is known to be quite beautiful and, being completely new to us, the trip was an adventure. Since Eastern Europe is poor compared to the standards we are used to in the UK, we didn’t expect very comfortable living conditions, but we were housed in a school which had recently been built, we ate well and, we hope, we made a valuable contribution to local needs.

At the end of the working day, we used the school’s sports facilities to relax and we had a chance to explore the Bierszczady Mountains nearby. We also visited some of the many interesting places in Poland on our journey.

Intensive Study Week

This is an ideal opportunity to leave behind the usual distractions at home and concentrate on your exam preparations within an atmosphere of intense study. The timetable will guarantee a high number of hours to study each day, with breaks to help you keep your mind fresh and alert.

Preparation for public examinations

This week is a challenge. It is for those seriously wanting to give of their best in forthcoming examinations, helped by the presence of others intent on the same purpose. The central aim is to study hard without distractions and gain the maximum benefit from an intensive study course. Within a few months the holiday period will come and all the effort would have been worthwhile.

It will take place at Thornycroft Hall in the heart of the picturesque Cheshire countryside. The study room looks out over rolling countryside onto a fishing lake and green fields dotted with Cheshire cows. The nearest shop is miles away and there is no television. It is a week to do without walkmans and mobiles.

Accommodation will be in single rooms and the study room area will have plenty of space for you to spread out your books and notes. The staff of the Conference Centre will provide all meals and there will be plenty of coffee and tea breaks to keep up the concentration levels. And it is not all study! There will be short excursions, sports including Frisbee in the breaks, feature films and other ways to relax. We are close to the Peak District.

What should I bring?

We will be travelling up by minibus from London, so there is plenty of room for as many books and reference material as you may chose to bring. Ensure you are well kitted out with pens, pencils, paper and calculators, plus any past papers or syllabuses you are able to bring along.

In addition, bring changes of clothes and plenty of sports kit, pyjamas, wash kit and a warm coat. You will not need much spending money.

Who runs the Study Week?

The Intensive Study Week is an activity of Kelston Club & Study Centre. Though a varied programme of activities and events, Kelston encourages young people to use their time constructively and to improve their ability to study well. Open to all, spiritual activities are entrusted to Opus Dei, a personal prelature of the Catholic Church.

Kelston Spain Trip 2008
To walk the Camino de Santiago

front

Aim: To walk the final 120km of the northern route of the Camino de Santiago, starting at the village of Vilalba and finishing at Santiago de Compostela, Spain.
When: July 22nd – 30th
Who: 16-18 year olds

Since the Middle Ages people have walked the Camino de Santiago, a famous pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela in North West Spain. In recent years the Camino has grown hugely in popularity. In 1985 2,491 pilgrims completed the Camino. In 1995 there were 19,821, then in 2005 there were 93,921. Along the route there are hostels or Refugios where the pilgrims can spend the night. Those who walk at least 100km qualify for the ‘Compostela’, a certificate confirming that they have walked the Camino. A group from Kelston will be walking the Camino in late July 2008. As well as a great opportunity to participate in this traditional pilgrimage, they also plan to seek sponsorship in order to raise money for the Kelston project to increase Kelston to three times its current size by taking over and converting the house next door. The definitive Kelston project works will start this summer, so this is a timely opportunity for the club members to contribute to the fundraising efforts.

We will fly to Santiago de Compostela in Spain and then travel by bus to Vilalba, the village where we will start the walk. We plan to walk the 120km in six days and then use the remaining days to relax and visit places of interest in and around Santiago de Compostela.

Cost: £295. In addition to this, each person is expected to raise a minimum of £100 toward the Kelston Project. Sponsorship forms are available to help raise this money. A place can be booked on the trip by paying a deposit of £150, which will enable us to book flights at the earliest opportunity.

Details of full insurance cover for the trip are available on request. Full details on what to bring, travel arrangements, etc, will be provided to those who express an interest in going.
