STUDY CENTRE                     15-25 year olds

APRIL 2008

13th   An evening of Inspiration. Teams are given answers and battle it out to form the questions.

20th     Chess Challenge, with cappuccinos and chocolates you bring along.   

27th     Desert Island Discs. Select a song, a book and an object of your choice and be interviewed on why you want to take them on your island.

Intensive study days will take place at Kelston throughout the term.  They begin at 10am on Saturday and Sunday mornings.  Bring packed lunch.

MAY

4th   Basketball match at Netherhall House in the evening.

11th  Speakers’ Corner. Get up on your soap box and persuade the audience with your arguments on a topic of your choosing.

18th  Blockbuster feature film using the new Kelston projector and big screen.

The London to Brighton Cycle Ride is on the 15th June to raise money for the Kelston 25-Year Expansion Project. Collect details of sponsorship and cycling arrangements well in advance.

25th   Computer Challenge Evening. A chance to pit your wits against the computer in a variety of games and challenges.

JUNE

1st     Evening Excursion to St Katherine’s Dock, Tower Bridge, with a visit to a Brick Lane curry house. Bring money for the meal.

8th    Professor David Jones debates embryo experimentation on DVD. 

15th   The Annual London to Brighton Fundraising Cycle Ride. This year is important since the final expansion works in Kelston begin now.

22nd  Visit to the Globe Theatre for a performance of King Lear, from 6.30pm till 9.30pm at a cost of £5 entry. Reserve your ticket at Kelston quickly.

29th   Barbecue for all the family at Kelston starting at 2pm and going on till 6pm. Bring along food and drink to contribute to the fare.

JULY

6th    Feature film on the big screen

13th   Barbecue and Reunion of present and past Kelstonians to present the 25-Year Expansion Project, with a special slide show on the big screen. £5 a head.

SENIORS                                                   13-15 year olds

APRIL

Easter Dorset Camp. 3 days of sports and adventure, with visits to the Jurassic coast and local places of interest. See information sheet for further details.

19th     Classic Feature Film: Twelve Angry Men.  A dissenting juror in a murder trial slowly manages to convince the others that the case is not as clear as it seemed in court.             

26th     Draughts and Doughnuts. It’s easy to learn how to play if you’re not already an expert. Bring along a set if you can and try to become the first Kelston draughts champion.

MAY

3rd   Drums and Rhythm Session. Jon Desbruslais and his colleague from Guildhall lead a hands-on rhythm session using a range of percussion instruments for all to play.

10th  Ultimate Frisbee out on the common in the evening.

Those over 14 can join the London to Brighton Cycle Ride on the 15th June to raise money for the Kelston 25-Year Expansion Project. Collect details of sponsorship and cycling arrangements well in advance.

17th   Morning cycle ride in preparation for the London to Brighton Bike Ride leaving at 11am. Bring your bike and a packed lunch. We will return for the  FA Cup Final and our own match on the common.

24th  Balloon Debate. You will need to argue your case for your character to stay in the balloon.

31st   All Day Excursion to Canterbury, Herne Bay and Aylesford. We leave Kelston at 10.30am and return at 8pm. Bring £7, a packed lunch, swimming gear and a towel.

JUNE

7th   Football Tournament. Join the action on the Netherhall all-weather pitch in north London. We leave Kelston at 2pm and come back at 7pm.  

14th  Special guest Nick Mason, a former British Army officer, presents his experiences from Iraq, illustrated with slides and film clips.

21st  Lights, camera, action! In the previous weeks we will work on the script so that we can film a video all in one evening.

28th   Baseball game out on the common in the evening.

29th    Sunday. Barbecue for all the family at Kelston starting at 2pm and going on till 6pm. Bring along food and drink to contribute to the fare.

JULY

5th   Beijing Olympics 2008. Take part in the Kelston Olympics Video Quiz in preparation for the summer games. 

12th   Excursion to Bignor Roman Villa and then Climping for a swim in the sea. Bring £5, a packed lunch, swimming gear and a towel. We leave Kelston at 10.30am and return at 7pm for the end-of-term barbecue.

JUNIORS                                     10-12 year olds

APRIL

12th   Art Collage. Bring all your artistic skills to bear as you contribute to a giant collage which, once complete, will be displayed in the lounge.

19th   Kelston Film Production: Scripting. Submit your ideas for the new film to be made over the coming weeks. Also enjoy a recent blockbuster movie on the big screen.

26th   Kelston Film Production: Props and Rehearsals. Create costumes and props for the filming of the new Kelston epic and rehearse your role. Kelston rock will be sold today.

MAY

3rd   Kelston Film Production: Filming. Lights, camera, action! Fully rehearsed and kitted out, take part in the filming of the new Kelston movie.

10th  Kelston Film Production: Premiere. We will watch the full version of the new epic movie. Submarines out on the common also.

17th   Build a Tower in an Hour. Design and construct a tower which will be tested for both stability and strength.

24-27th     The Kelston Summer Camp from Saturday till Tuesday at High Ashurst outdoor activity centre. Pick up full details and come along.

31st   Frisbee Tournament. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? It’s a Frisbee coming your way! Kelston rock will be on sale today.

JUNE

7th   Football Training Session. Jean Claude Doukrou, Snr, will coach a special training programme today. This is your chance to take your footballing skills to a new level!

14th  Under the Spotlight. Take part in a number of acting scenarios to convince the world that you need to be in Hollywood!

21st   The Annual JTC Event (Juniors’ Team Challenge). This year is a special Olympics edition. You need speed, strength and staying power!

28th   Baseball Game out on the common. Kelston rock will be on sale today.

29th   Sunday. Barbecue for all the family at Kelston starting at 2pm and going on till 6pm. Bring along food and drink to contribute to the fare.

JULY

5th    All-day Excursion to the Coral Reef, Bracknell’s Water World. Bring £6, a packed lunch, swimming gear and a towel. We will be back by 5pm.

12th   The traditional way to end the summer term: It’s a Knockout! Bring a change of clothes and get ready to have fun with water balloons. Kelston rock will be on sale today.

 

Spring 2008

STUDY CENTRE         15-25 year olds                                 

JANUARY

13th   Chess, Chocolate and Cappuccinos. Chess games for all abilities. Bring along chocolates! Throughout January there will be intensive study weekends, from 10am on Saturday till Sunday evening.

20th  Music Appreciation Evening. Bring two songs on MP3 or CD; a favourite and something more challenging. Introduce each and then vote on all songs played.

27th   Guest Speaker: Nick Mason, former British army officer serving in Iraq, tells of life on the front line and gives a personal view on life in Iraq now.

More intensive study weekends will take place at Kelston until June. There is a special study week in the countryside soon after Easter. Book early as places are limited.  Also, full details are available on the annual Kelston retreat in Wickenden Manor from 1st to 3rd of February. FEBRUARY

3rd   All-American meal and entertainment. Super Bowl XLII will be played in Arizona and those who wish can stay over to watch the match live. We will show an episode of Alistair Cooke’s history of America.

10th  Chinese Evening to celebrate the Year of the Rat, with special meal and authentic Chinese movie.

17th  The Kelston Debate. This house believes that there is no such thing as ‘Britishness’.

24th  Great Directors of Cinema: Frank Capra. One of the director’s classic films introduced by Kevin Turley and followed by a general discussion.

Kelston will be raising funds all year to go towards the Kelston Project, including the June cycle ride to Brighton. Works begin in April to complete the expansion programme by the autumn.

MARCH

2nd    U.N. Security Council Mock Role-Play. Represent a country in the negotiations of the United Nations and decide your nation’s future.

9th    The filming of a famous Sherlock Holmes’ short story in period costume. The screenplay will be written in the course of February.

16th  Stocks and Shares Simulation Game. Compete to become a dollar millionaire in the hectic hour you have to build your fortune.

SENIORS                13-15 year olds

JANUARY

12th     Planet Earth Team Quiz. How fast does the earth revolve around the sun? 66,000 miles an hour you say? Correct.

19th     The Kelston premiere of a Hollywood box office success recently released on DVD.

26th     Using Kelston’s Melchior telescope and showing amazing documentary footage, Dancho Azagra presents Saturn from close up.

FEBRUARY

2nd   Impressive Hobbies. Bring along your collections, your painted models, your drawings, your games or whatever it is you have a great interest in. Give a short presentation on why you have chosen the hobby.

9th    Chinese New Year Celebrations. There will be a Chinese guest and you may wish to bring jingle dragon wands, face masks or homemade costume on any oriental theme. Face paint will be available.

Those who wish to come for extra study time can arrive at 11am on Saturday mornings and bring a packed lunch.

16th  Table Tennis and Computer Console Challenges. Various indoor sports will feature either in reality or in the virtual world.

23rd  Traditional and Family Board Games Evening. Kelston has a wide collection, so explore new games or go for ones you have already mastered.

MARCH

1st     Script, rehearse and perform on camera a series of comedy sketches, to produce a Kelston Comedy Show all in one evening.

8th   Bridge Engineering Project. Teams have a time limit to design and build a bridge out of the materials presented to them and to construct it in such a way that it takes the weight of a rolling vehicle.

15th  All-Day Excursion to various locations for a pentathlon of sports and outdoor activities. Bring a packed lunch and £5. We will leave at 10.30am. Regular activities will take place in the evening. 

JUNIORS               10-12 year olds

JANUARY

12th   Challenge of the Senses. All five senses will be put to the test, but don’t worry; you won’t have to eat brussel sprouts!

Every term there is an activity to which younger brothers can be invited. On 15sth March they can join the End of Term Show.  You can see what is coming up on the programme at www.kelston.org.uk for quick reference.

19th   After the usual game of football, enjoy a special all-action feature film on the big screen.

26th   Total-Art Challenge. A competition which involves trying your hand at various forms of art within a set time limit. Kelston rock will be on sale at the end of the morning.

FEBRUARY

2nd   The East London Discovery Tour. The excursion leaves at 10.30am and returns at 4pm. Bring warm clothes,  a Travelcard (including zones 1 to 3) or money to buy one, and a packed lunch. 

Members' friends and families are always welcome to come along and see the club - just phone to say you are on your way.

9th   The Kelston Puppet Show. If you have any puppets, bring them along to join the considerable Kelston collection. We will film the performances and watch it on another day.

15-17th         Pheasantry Weekend. A weekend away in a cottage deep in the Sussex countryside. Pick up a sheet with full details. Limited places. No club at Kelston this weekend.

23rd  Speed Grand Prix. The Kelston scalextrics set will come down once again from the ceiling for the traditional Juniors’ race meeting. Kelston rock will be on sale at the end of the morning.

MARCH

1st     The Annual NBC 5-a-side Football Tournament. Try to get a team of your friends together and enter the competition. Watch out for the entry forms with full details in early February.

8th   Easter Egg Challenge. Fast becoming an annual event, teams find ways to drop a raw egg from the top floor of Kelston without breaking it. Winners receive unbroken crème eggs!

15th  The Traditional End of Term Show. Sketches, jokes, music and magic together with slides and videos of the term’s events. Younger brothers are welcome today. Kelston rock will be on sale at the end of the morning.

SEPTEMBER

9th    U.N. Role-Play Game. Take on a country and decide its future. Outline of possible Skills Sessions available in the afternoons; touch-typing, creative writing, photography, advanced mathematics, astronomy and historiography, among others.

16th   Computer Game Convention. Tim Golden presents a thought-provoking snap-shot of the current market place.

23rd   Round-the-table Table Tennis Tournament.

30th   The Study Centre Discussion. Zubin Mystry on the writing of history from diverging perspectives.

A Challenging Issues course will take place later in the term.  Full details will be available separately and advertised on the website.

OCTOBER

7th   Full-day mountain biking excursion to Deer’s Leap. No need to take bikes as they will be hired there. Bring £7 and a packed lunch. Leaving Kelston at 11.30am. Evening Skiing slide show and details of this year’s trip, together with the photos from the Poland Work Camp.

14th  Stephen Tsang: The Decline of Realism. A history of photo-realism in the cinema and the over-reliance on computer graphics.

21st   The Study Centre Discussion. Sam Burke on the working of Parliament and the two-house system.

There will be a Ski Trip to Austria again this December after Christmas, and full details will be available and on the website in early October.

28th        The Indian Evening, with special meal and the film Black: ‘She cannot see…nor hear nor speak…She inhabits a world of infinite black.’

NOVEMBER

4th    Kelston’s own firework display in the garden, with hot dogs and doughnuts. Bring a contribution of £5 for the fireworks.

11th   Rock Performance. A mix of classic live recordings of the best in rock music captured on video.

18th   Soap Box. Kelston’s own speakers’ corner, as everyone is invited to get up on the box and express an opinion on a subject of his choice and defend it before a heckling crowd.

25th   Light-hearted team quiz answering questions on current affairs, trivia and sports, with video footage and television clips.

DECEMBER

2nd    Creating Instant Cinema. Fast-action video recording of comedy and entertaining sketches. 

9th    Winter Walkabout. Casual stroll down the river in central London.

16th   The Annual Christmas Dinner followed by the traditional show. Places at table must be booked by the previous week.

Seniors

SEPTEMBER

8th       Kicking off the term with a game of baseball out on the common. Choose a regular activities for the autumn term.

15th     Team wide game at a local venue.

22nd    The Star Wars season starts with Episode 4 tonight, and all the others will be shown on special evening showings in the coming months.

29th     The Parliamentary Debate. Join the floor of the House and speak for or against the government’s position on important matters.

OCTOBER

6th       Snakes Alive. The reptile expert Ted Wade brings along some of his pets for your entertainment.

13th   5-a-side football competition at a local sports centre. Bring along kit and £3.50. Friends welcome to take part.

20th   Make the Headlines. Join a team of journalists to work against the clock reporting on a famous historical event.

26-28th Pheasantry Weekend.  See separate sheet or website for details. Make sure you get your name down early as there are limited places.

NOVEMBER

3rd    Fireworks Show. We will be going to a local bonfire and fireworks display. Bring £5 for admission and Travelcard. Note that we will be back at a later time, 9.15pm.

10th     Desert Island Discs.  ‘This is my favourite song because…’  Bring along your favourite song and be ready to say why it’s an all-time great.

17th     Astronomy Evening. A video presentation on Mars and the universe, with another chance to see the night sky through Kelston’s Melchior telescope.

24th  Take part in the Kelston Initiative Test in central London. A competition to amass the best collection of freebees acquired using only your wit, charm and initiative.         

DECEMBER

1st     Musical Evening. Bring along any instrument you play and your singing voice.

8th   No Seniors today because of the Juniors Christmas Party. You are welcome to come for the family event in the evening.

15th   The Seniors Christmas Party and Show. Look out for details on what to bring.

Juniors

SEPTEMBER

 8th   Start the year with a chance to enter the Kelston Book of Records which has the best performances recorded for all kinds of skills and challenges.

 15thFor potential rocket scientists, designing and building water rockets from a plastic bottle and other materials. Everything recorded on video.

22nd  Activity Crews. Choose one of the activities on offer to follow for the term. Afterwards there will be a chance to buy Kelston rock.

29th   All-day excursion to RichmondPark, leaving at 10.20am and back at 4pm. Bring a packed lunch, £3 and suitable outdoor clothing.

OCTOBER

6th    The second Activity Crews session to continue your project for the term.

12-14th  Pheasantry weekend in the cottage in the grounds of Wickenden Manor in Sussex. Limited places, so express your interest early. Details sheet will appear in September.

20th  Build a bridge to test your engineering and team skills, with each bridge having to pass the tractor drive-over test.

27th   Activity Crews sessions. Kelston rock will be on sale today.

NOVEMBER

3rd    Help create the Kelston Trilogy Cartoon. Separate groups will produce the three sections of a cartoon telling an adventure story, joined together at the end.

10th  The annual Kelston Fun Fair, with lots of enjoyable activities to earn Kelstonian bank notes with which to enter the Lucky Puppet Dip. Cost of entry is £3. Friends and younger brothers over 8 are welcome to this fun event.

17th  Breaking News Marathon. Some will present a TV news programme whilst others will make up amusing news items to be announced ‘live’ as they occur.

25th  The final Activity Crews session of the term. We will see the results of the different groups today, and Kelston rock will be on sale.

DECEMBER

1st     Get your skates on and come ice skating at the rink in Streatham. Bring £7, a packed lunch, a Travelcard (zone 3) or money to buy a ticket, a coat and gloves. We will be back at 3pm.

8th   Christmas Party with lots of games and a visit from a special surprise guest. Collect the details sheet. Younger brother over 8 can join you. Followed by the parents’ Christmas evening, to which you can stay.

SEPTEMBER

7th         Samurai Japan: A Journey to an Ancient World. Includes a visit to the local Fujisan Japanese restaurant, at £7.50 per head.  Decorated in the traditional  minimalist Japanese style, the meal itself is at a sunken table. Also, slides of the recent Camino de Santiago trip on our return.

14th       Students who attended a summer social project at Mae Sot near the Thai-Myanmar border present a video and slide show of their memorable experiences.

21st       Visit to the South Bank for Disappearing Acts. Efrosini Protopapa and Lapsus Corpi present an unpredictable performance. Free entry at 5pm.

28th       The Study Centre Discussion. Dominic Schofield on Russia today and day-to-day life in Moscow.

Kelston is open for private study each day from 3.30pm and all day on Saturdays. There will be a Ski Trip to Austria again this December.

OCTOBER

5th        The London Philharmonic Orchestra’s Renga Ensemble performs Indian classical music with jazz and western classical influences on the South Bank. Free entry. We need to be there by 4.45pm.

12th      Feature film on the big screen with a quality sound system.   

19th       Music Appreciation Session. Introduce others to two songs you like: a favourite and an aural challenge! Everyone has the chance to give their opinion and vote.

   26th           Visit to Netherhall House students’ residence, to include musical jam session in their auditorium.

NOVEMBER

2nd        Visit to a local fireworks display, with hot dogs and doughnuts

9th         Toastmasters. Public speaking session with table topics on both easy and more challenging subjects. 

16th       The Roundtable Discussion. Topical items in the news of the week are presented and commented upon.

21-23rd Pheasantry Leader Training Weekend.  Practical instructional programme for running outdoor activities, with visits to Deer’s Leap Mountain Bike Course and Hindleap Warren Outdoor Centre.

30th       The Study Centre Discussion. A number of parents will talk about their professions and how their career paths developed.

DECEMBER

7th         Recording of a live radio magazine programme, including current affairs, sports and interviews.

14th       The Annual Christmas Dinner followed by the traditional show. Places at table must be booked by the previous week.

SEPTEMBER

6th             The choosing of regular activities for the term. We will re-live the summer camps with a slide show, and then play Ultimate Frisbee.

13th          Comic Brief – script and film comedy sketches all in one evening.

Academic coaching is available for all seniors in the course of the term. Register your interest to arrange regular sessions. There will be a Ski Trip to Austria again this December.

 20th          Fresh from its box office success, a recent feature film on the big screen.

27th          London 2012 Excursion. Take part in five sporting challenges while travelling around London by tube and bus. Bring a packed lunch, a travelcard and £5 for entrance fees. Leave at 10am and back for 6pm.

OCTOBER

4th             Perfect Recall. Four teams battle it out to win the three-round mega-quiz on sports, science and the arts.

11th       No club today. There is a one-day leaders’ and helpers’ First Aid course at Kelston organised by the Wandsworth Youth Service.

18th       Lightning Chess Championship. It’s only ten seconds per move, but we hope to have a 2008 champion by the end of the evening.

NOVEMBER

1st         Fireworks Show. We will be going to a local bonfire and fireworks display. Bring £5 for admission and a travelcard. Back at 9.15pm.

8th             The Kelston Factor. Help your team to victory in a medley of activities which will test the limits of your physical and mental abilities.

15th          Enjoy the verbal rough and tumble of a parliamentary debate as you take on the persona of a cabinet MP and face your counterpart on the other side of the House.

22nd     The autumn seniors five-a-side football competition at a local sports centre. Bring along kit and £4. Friends are welcome to take part. Regular activities in the evening.

29th       Crazy Golf Competition. Each team creates a crazy golf hole in a room of the club and then we each play them all.

DECEMBER

6th        Pre-Christmas trip to see the Christmas lights in central London and to visit a 3-D film at the BFI-IMAX cinema. Look out for details.

13th       No club today. Families are invited to the special Christmas celebrations with carols in the evening.

20th       The Seniors Christmas Party and Show. Full details of what to bring will be available in November.
